COSTA BLANCA – BEAUTIFUL BEACHES & LOVELY ATMOSPHERE

Maybe I’m biased, but I think the Costa Blanca is the most beautiful place for a summer holiday in Spain. Whether you are looking for a sporting holiday, want to experience art and culture, or just relax around the pool or by the sea.

White coastal region

The Costa Blanca is popular with tourists from abroad and Spaniards alike. The region owes its name to the white blossom of the almond trees the hills are dotted with. They don’t bloom in the summer, but the famous white houses are still there. Just like the beautiful beaches. In Altea, the beach is covered with white pebbles, which make a beautiful sound in the surf. La Olla is one of the longer beaches of Altea and is easy to reach, even for people with walking difficulties. A perfect beach to dive from is El Mascarat. The very clean beach La Roda is located directly on the promenade, you can rent umbrellas and sunbeds.

Pleasant temperature in summer and winter

Altea has a Mediterranean climate, with warm dry summers and few clouds. In July and August, the maximum daytime temperature is around thirty degrees, the minimum temperature around 20. There is hardly any rain, the seawater is about 24 degrees. Nice beach weather.

So much to do in and around Altea

There is so much to do in Altea and the Costa Blanca. Personally, I love to start the day with a walk along the beach and have a relaxed breakfast at one of the nice restaurants. Although that walk is also fun in the evening, in combination with a drink or ice cream on the boulevard. Be sure to look at the – occasionally quite naugthy – works of art on the boulevard. Speaking of art: there are nice exhibitions in the art galleries in the centre of Altea regularly. On Tuesday there is a bustling market. Especially in summer there are several festivals that are worth a visit. Also, be sure to visit the waterfalls of Algar and the spectacular El Castell de Gaudalest. Fuentes De Algar, towards Benidorm, is a beautiful relaxing place with lots of greenery, waterfalls, and views.

Fun and games

Want a little more action? Go sailing or take a helicopter ride. Nearby you can play paintball and there are several amusement parks: Terra Mitica, Mundomar, Magic Natura (with zoo), Aqualandia or Aqua Natura. Great for kids. Just like the chocolate museum in Villajoyosa by the way. And in Benidorm there is of course always something to do. For example, you can do a jetkis tour, diving, sea kayaking and water skiing. But there is also a vibrant nightlife with larger and smaller discotheques, pubs and pubs.

Touring by tram

Want to experience something special? Get on the tram to Alicante: the route takes you past luxury villas and the coastline. Get off at the last stop and walk straight to the city centre. Don’t feel like going back by public transport? Give me a call and I’ll pick you up.

When are you coming?

Als in Nederland de regen tegen de ramen slaat en de blaadjes van de bomen waaien, is het in Altea nog steeds even heerlijk. De middagtemperatuur ligt rond de 25 graden Celsius, de zeewatertemperatuur trouwens ook. In oktober is de echte zomer wel over, maar het is dan nog steeds lekker. In november is het zo ongeveer twintig graden. Overdag lekker, ’s avonds trek ik dan een vestje aan op het terras. En in de villa’s van Perfect Destinations zorg ik voor een paar mooie throws en lekkere dekentjes.

Oktoberfeesten
In de provincies Castellón, Valencia en Alicante vieren de mensen op 9 oktober de Día de la Comunidad Valenciana. Op deze datum staat de hele regio stil bij het feit dat op 9 oktober 1238 Koning Jaime I de stad Valencia heroverde op de Moorse bezetters. In veel plaatsen zijn spectaculaire vuurwerkshows te zien, ook Altea viert het feest. De avond voor de feestdag zelf vindt er in het Turia Park in Valencia om middernacht een spectaculair vuurwerk plaats. Op 9 oktober is er ook genoeg vuurwerk te zien. In het Palau d’Altea en het Casa de Cultura zijn regelmatig concerten. Op de website van De Week staat een kalender met alle activiteiten: https://www.deweek.net/kalender.php. En ook op Altea Cultural zijn leuke activiteiten te vinden, de informatie is vaak wel in het Spaans.

Uit eten in Altea
De herfstvakantie is, net als het voorjaar, ideaal voor sportievelingen. Maar het is ook een geweldig seizoen om uit eten te gaan. In de mooie oude stad Valencia moet je natuurlijk de traditionele paella Valenciana proeven. Verder vind je aan de Costa Blanca een groot aantal restaurants, en zeker niet allemaal toeristische zaken! Overal zijn typisch Spaanse restaurants, tapasbars, visrestaurants en opvallend veel sterrenrestaurants. Zoals Quique Dacosta (***) in Dénia, BonAmb (**) en El Rodat (*) in Jávea/Xàbia en in Calpe zitten er zelfs drie: Orbianco (*), Audrey’s by Rafa Soler (*) en Beat (*). Atticook in Dénia heeft een vermelding in de Michelingids en Restó René in Villajoyosa verdient er wat mij betreft een. In Altea zijn mensen enthousiast over Go Vegan By Adrian Muser, maar ook het Japanse Kitsume is populair. Ijs eet je bij Qvo Helado Artesano Altea. En de oesters van Club Nautico aan de jachthaven zijn geweldig.

Nou ja, wie wil kan dus elke dag voor ontbijt, lunch en diner heerlijk uit eten. Maar thuis koken is natuurlijk ook gezellig. Ik bezorg de boodschappen, maar kan ook een kok voor u regelen. Heerlijk relaxed na een drukke dag.

Spring in Altea – almond blossoms and more

One of the things the Costa Blanca is famous for is the almond blossoms. When the temperatures in February are around fourteen degrees, the entire coast turns into a flower parade. Almond trees are in bloom everywhere. A spectacular start to spring, which never gets boring. From afar it sometimes looks like it has snowed. A little further from the coast, the blossoms are usually a little later. The Jalon Valley (Vall de Pop) is one of the most famous sites. Fantastic to drive through, by car or by bike. And of course, a nice picnic basket with you. In Xaló and the villages of Parcent and Alcalalí it is beautiful. In the latter village they also celebrate the Feslali festival. But it is also worthwhile to go and see in Alicante, in the Valle de Guadalest. Campo de Cagitán in Murcia is sometimes white and pink until March and it smells delicious. And don’t forget to bring some nougat!

Perfect sports weather

Many people come to Altea and surroundings in the spring because it is ideal weather for cycling: usually around 20 degrees. Not too cold, not too hot, and beautiful surroundings. What more could you wish for? Horse riding and hiking are popular sports during spring break. On Wikiloc you can find a number of nice walking routes, such as this one through Altea. Golf is also a popular sport for holidaymakers in the spring. Altea has a golf club and the golf course Don Cayo with beautifully selected on the Sierra Bernia and the sea. Villaitana Golf in Benidorm also has two beautiful courses and there are many more special places to discover.

Culture and chocolate

Spring is also the perfect time for culture. Altea and Calpe are beautiful, but also Villajoyosa (with a nice chocolate museum) and the mountain village of Guadelest with a fun miniature museum. By car you can get there in no time, and you can enjoy the view of the beautiful turquoise coloured reservoir from the castle on the mountain top.

Also nice: a day trip to Calpe to visit the archaeological museums and the fish market of the city. But spring also means Easter, and that is celebrated here in Spain with the Semana Santa or Holy Week. There are spectacular faith celebrations everywhere. In Villajoyosa there are processions in the city every evening. Oh, and media February is the Festa del Porquet: The feast of the pig. A tribute to Spanish cuisine with lots of pork.

Day at Jalon

Also nice: on Saturday there is a large ‘rastro’ in Jalon – a trunk sale. At this flea market you can often find special things and antiques for sale, but also local products such as honey. Near the market is a nice bodega, with good wine – another thing Jalon is famous for. With the car that you can book with all villas of Perfect Destinations, you are there in no time. Although, when you are planning a wine tasting, it might be better if I drive you. ☺

Veel Nederlanders, Engelsen en Duitsers overwinteren in Altea en Benidorm. Heel logisch, want de winter voelt hier als lente, met middagtemperaturen die rond de 18 graden liggen. Uit de wind is het heerlijk op het strand of op het terras. Altea zelf is een stuk rustiger in vergelijking met het zomerseizoen, ideaal om dit mooie plaatsje te ervaren zoals het vroeger was.

Genoeg te zien in Altea
Altea is de droom van de kunstliefhebber, elke hoek die je omslaat biedt weer een nieuw mooi plaatje. Je loopt ineens een leuk marktje op, ziet lieve witgekalkte huisjes en smalle, geplaveide straatjes. Er zijn leuke stranden, de delta van de rivier de Algar is zeker een bezichtiging waard, net als de Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa San Miguel Arcangel. Ook in de winter is er op dinsdag markt. En ook op Altea Cultural zijn leuke activiteiten te vinden, de informatie is vaak wel in het Spaans.

Vakantiehuis voor de winter
Een winterbreak van een paar weken of maanden is heerlijk. Lekker genieten van het mooie weer, dat is goed voor uw gezondheid en voor uw humeur. Vindt u het ’s avonds toch wat frisjes? Alle villa’s van Perfect Destinations hebben centrale verwarming, Casa Oasis de Paz heeft zelfs een open haard. En anders warmt een pittig rood wijntje u wel op. Ga zelf iets uitzoeken in het wijnmuseum van Hondon de Las Nieves, of laat mij iets voor u klaarzetten.

Houdt u van wat winterzon? Wat dacht u van kerst en oud en nieuw in Spanje? Onze villa’s zijn perfect voor een gezellige familievakantie naar de zon, ook voor wie op zijn privacy gesteld is. De knusse vierpersoons villa Casa Oasis de Paz is met een tussendeur in de tuin te verbinden met Casa Cielo en la Tierra. Zo kunt u hier met 10 personen genieten van een fantastische kerstvakantie. Ik zorg natuurlijk voor een verwarmd en verlicht huis bij aankomst, kerstversiering en een heerlijk kerstdiner thuis of in een toprestaurant. En voor turron, de bekende Spaanse zoete amandeltraktatie die vooral tijdens de kerstdagen populair is. Jijona – in de bergen boven Alicante – is de hoofdstad van de turron en heeft een turron-museum. Een ideaal kerst-uitje.

Kerstmarkten en feesten
Maar er is veel meer te doen in deze tijd. Tijdens de kerstperiode zijn steden en dorpen in Spanje prachtig verlicht en de winkels mooi versierd. In veel Spaanse steden zijn kerstmarkten, en overal vind je levende kerststallen (belenes vivientes). Kerstavond (Nochebuena) wordt gevierd met een groot kerstdiner met familie. En daarna natuurlijk naar de nachtmis (la Misa del Gallo). Op Dia de Navidad (kerstdag) bezoeken Spanjaarden familie en eten ze een feestmaaltijd. Let op: op 28 december is het Dia de los Santos Inocentes, te vergelijken met onze 1 april.

Oud en nieuw
Op 31 december luiden Spanjaarden het nieuwe jaar in met het eten van 12 druiven. In de avond van 5 januari is dan nog de optocht van de Drie Koningen (los Reyes Magos). Caspar, Melchior en Balthazar gooien handenvol snoep naar de kinderen die langs de kant staan, en thuis mogen de kinderen hun schoentje zetten. Op 6 januari eten de Spanjaarden Roscón de Reyes, een ringvormige cake waarin een figuurtje van een koning en een boon verstopt zitten. Wie de koning vindt, wordt de koning voor de dag. Wie de boon vindt, moet volgend jaar de cake bakken. Een goed excuus om weer terug te komen naar dit heerlijke land.

Alle villa’s van Perfect Destinations zijn ingericht op overwinteren en hebben dus centrale verwarming, Casa Oasis de Paz heeft zelfs een open haard.
